Abstract

The author made calvarial defects of different sizes in rat to study the effect of defect size on hea1ing process. Experimental animals were sacrified at 3 days, 1 week, 2,4,6 weeks. The specimens were examed under light microscope with Hematoxlin-Eosin and modified Gomlori¢¥s trichrome stain, and under fluorescent microscope after glinding the specimens.
The results were as follows.
1. 4mm-diameter calvarial defects healed about 70% after 6 weeks.
2. Lamellated bone tralbecules were seen in 6mm-diameter calvarial defects after 4 weeks, and the small specules of bone and marrows were observed after 6 weeks.
3. 10mm-diameters calvarial defects healed about 50% and incomplete interconnection of the lamellated bone trabecules were observed after 6 weeks.
4. Under fluorescent microscope, about 4mm-long bone regeneration could be seen in most of the defects.
